Refill Instructions for Standard Plaster Pools
We strongly suggest a trained professional handle the start-up of your pool. Please follow the instructions given to you at the time of refilling the pool:

  1. Notify the pool service people to restart the service and turn on the equipment.
  2. If you are going to be adding new chemicals to the pool, you may add some stain preventative when the pool is about half full. Pour the liquid into a bucket of water, stir, then pour the bucket of water into the pool water. If there is a colored plaster, be especially careful not to spash on the dry plaster.
  3. *If there have been problems with black algae before the renovation, the pool filter should be completely cleaned prior to restarting the pumps. Black algae has been known to "hibernate" in the filter and could respread into the pool again.

    Brushing the pool:

  4. Once the pool service or you have restarted the equipment, you may begin brushing the pool.
  5. Most white pools should be brushed 2-3 times a day. Pools that have been tinted or or colored may require more. Be sure to brush the steps and love seats each time.
  6. Adjusting the pool suction can be done so that most of the water is sucked from the bottom of the pool during the first couple of weeks of sweeping. This will improve the removal of the plaster dust, which usually settles on the bottom of the pools' deep end, in the area of the pump/filter opening. This adjustment can be returned to the routine setting when the brushing is complete. After the initial brushing period of about 2 weeks, the pool sweep may be placed in service:
  7. Check hoses for any exposed metal, indicating that the whip hose or its ending has been worn out and the metal will scratch the plaster or cause the edges of the steps to chip.
  8. Use of the vacuum head for cleaning the pool may also be resumed. Check the bottom of the vacuum for worn out parts or dirt that might mark the plaster.
  9. It is recommended that the gas or solar heater not be used for about 2 weeks after refilling. This will assure that most of the plaster dust (alkali or calcium) has been filtered out of the system prior to using the heating system. In some cases, plaster dust could stick to the filter elements.
  10. In commerical facilities, when tenants must have access to the spa, brush the plaster as much as possible before starting the heater.
  11. To obtain optimum water clarity quickly, it is helpful to run the pool equipment for up to 14 hours a day for the first 2 weeks after refilling. During the brushing period it is best to take a pool water sample to the local pool supply company:
  12. This is done to get an accurate reading of the chemical balance of your pool.
  13. It is important that the new pool water has a proper chemical balance.
  14. After a few weeks the water should be retested to insure that all chemical levels have been properly balanced.
  15. Every homeowner has particular questions to their own pool system. We welcome any questions, within our area of expertise, that might be helpful in realizing the full pleasure and success of the project.
